Siskiyou County is
home to a rich heritage dating back to the Gold Rush. In 1851, Yreka
was a boomtown with several thousand miners working new claims trying
to strike it rich. Even today, that rich tradition lives on in downtown
Yreka. Miner Street has many of the early buildings that have been
restored. Over seventy-five home built in the 1800's have been
preserved as well as many more constructed after the
turn-of-the-century. The residential district of Third Street has been
listed on the National Register of Historical Places in Washington, D.C.
Siskiyou
County offers its residents a four season lifestyle. Its wide
geographic regions offer a variety of climates to experience. Summers
can be hot and winters can be cold and stormy. The beautiful fall and
spring seasons are un-paralleled for their beauty and comfort.
Other
areas of Siskiyou County offer un-surpassed beauty and recreational
opportunities often only dreamed about. Mount Shasta City is situated
on the slopes of the 14,179 ft. volcano namesake. The Klamath River
slices through Siskiyou County and is joined by the Shasta River, the
Scott River and the Salmon River on its journey to the Pacific. The
Shasta Valley is home to many old time cattle ranches and farming
families from generations past. The beautiful Scott Valley is a hidden
oasis of recreational opportunities with the Marble Mountain Wilderness
Area, the old Oregon Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail among just a few
of its features.
In later years, Siskiyou County was home to a
robust logging industry as well as a rich tradition of railroad
history. Interstate 5 brought an infusion of tourism dollars when it
opened for traffic in the 1960's.
Siskiyou County is the 5th
largest county by area, but only 44th out of 58 California counties for
population. This makes for a lot of wide open space and many small
